about

Loretto came about in one of those fleeting moments of life, walking down a backstreet just north of Oxford Street. At the end of this alleyway was some graffiti, which was tagged “Loretto”, and that was it. By the time I walked out from the backstreet and out back on to the street, I was humming the chorus. It was pretty catchy, and the vibe was nice that day, so I recorded the melody on my phone, caught the tube home and began to work the chords out.
It’s properly amazing when melodies just appear out of nowhere like that, and totally captures the mysteries and magic of writing songs.

The feel for it was set pretty early on – that kind of laid back, Americana vibe – and as soon as I got that, I just let the images in my mind shape the lyrics, which is how I prefer to write. I began thinking about highways and roads leading across a mid-west desert in the US, with a city behind it and what that all represented… getting out, moving on, leaving things behind, starting something new, and the excitement and promise of it all.

It's just a great tune to put on, lose yourself in, and try to think of those times when anything was possible, and then go on, go out there, and do it.

lyrics

Whatever gets you down the highway
whatever gets you through the night
saw the writing on the wall there
And we ride on through the night

So we left that town this morning
the one where promise goes to die
and you'll never keep progressing
if you're always looking back

Oh, oh Loretto
Oh, oh Loretto
Oh, oh Loretto
Oh, oh Loretto

So we kept that motor running
and we opened all the doors
and the music kept playing
how I made my world so small

You know I'm dealing with the devil
all I do is look inside
but you have to keep believing
that you'll leave then all behind

Oh, oh Loretto
Oh, oh Loretto
